Just when I think that maybe I need some space from my boyfriend, or that we're not as compatible as I thought, he goes and does something that makes me realize that I have the best boyfriend in the world.

On Saturday afternoon, I was wandering around Manhattan, enjoying the briskly chilly day, and savoring the beginning of my last 24 hours in the USA. I wanted to go visit my favorite clothing store but, as I was sidetracked by the prettiness that is Laila Rowe, I never made it there. The first thing that I noticed was the handbags. They were gorgeous, and I almost couldn't choose, and none of them cost more than $20. Actually, as far as I could tell, the most expensive items in the store were scarves. I found one that I loved, and since it went well with the shirt that I'd just bought, I picked it up. I added a bag, necklace, and a pair of earrings. While there were some fabulous sales going on, I hadn't gotten any of my items from the discount areas, and was sad that I was going to have to pay full price.

Imagine my extreme happiness then, when it turned out that my stuff was on sale, and cost a lot less than I'd expected. I went home happy, wore my new clothing and accessories out that night, and had a good last night with my boyfriend and our friends.

Then, just a couple of hours after I got back to Montreal, I was talking on the phone with my boyfriend and rooting around for some scrap paper when I came across my receipt. I started to turn it over to the blank side to start my to-do list, but then I noticed that I had only been charged for three items; they hadn't charged me for the scarf. I felt pretty bad about that, since I don't like to cheat anybody. I mentioned to my boyfriend how I would have 1) pointed out the over sight to the cashiers (there were two people working on ringing up and bagging everything, and I think that's where the confusion came in) or 2) gone back and paid, had I noticed before I left the country.

Just like that, he said that he'd go for me. At first I thought he was kidding, but he was serious. He asked for the address of the store, so that he could pay for the scarf. How can you resist somebody like that?

I compartmentalize the world to an unhealthy degree; I am generally optimistic and happy, except when I'm bitter and depressed. I try to stay informed about what's going on in the world, but that usually leads to me getting angrier and more bitter. When I feel like this, I don't understand how I am ever okay with living in a world where this, this, and this can happen. What is wrong with people? Why are humans so disgusting and terrible? I can get used to the thousands of petty things that comprise everyday life, but when I read about things like this, I am more than ever aware of the existence of evil.

I have a midterm in eight hours, an appointment to interview a salon owner in ten hours, and a flight to catch in thirteen hours.

I haven't studied or cleaned my apartment (it's going to be shown to prospective tenants while I'm gone (maybe - nobody ever seems to show up).

So what am I going to do now? I'm going to sit on my bed and pretend to study for about a half hour (if I'm lucky and my endurance holds out), and then I'm going to go to bed until 7, at which point I will hopefully care a bit more, or at least just get things done.

We'll see.

Been a while, eh? No I'm not Canadian, I just play one in Montreal. Or something. My brother's girlfriend went into labor this morning. Have I finished the blanket that I was making? No. Am I even halfway through? Nope.

The kid isn't even born yet, and I'm already a bad aunt.
