Babies are people, too
The great thing about public transportation is that there are always interesting posters to read. Yesterday, while on my way to work, I was looking at a poster that promoted awareness of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Obviously, I'm all for informing people of how to lay their infants to minimize risk of SIDS, but I sort of froze when I read the tagline that said something about "lay[ing] your baby on its back." Why say "its?" That just makes a baby sound like an inanimate object. That's not good. Granted, "its" is grammatically correct and beats the standard American "their" for singular subjects, but still...Couldn't they have just gone a step further and said "his or her back?" Honestly.I spend valuable time thinking about this stuff.
